The Burdah or 'The Cloak' is a customary name given to a poem said in praise of the prophet Muhammad ﷺ. This custom started when the prophet ﷺ gave his cloak to Ka'ab ibn Zuhair, after presenting this wonderful poem in front of him.
Ka'ab was the son of Zuhair ibn Abi Sulma, the poet of the Mu'allaqat and was a great poet in his own right. At the advent of Islam he had insulted the Prophet ﷺ and the Muslims in his poetry, and the Prophet ﷺ ordered that he be killed. He says the Burdah poem in front of the Messenger ﷺ hoping for his mercy and forgiveness, after having accepted Islam.
