Emperor Shunzhi ascended the throne with the support of Regent Dorgon and his mother Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang, living under Dorgon's shadow during his youth. Despite having ambitions and ideals, he was restricted at every turn. Shunzhi became emperor at the age of five, ruled at thirteen, the first of the Qing Dynasty post-Manchu conquest. The TV series starts with Shunzhi's reign at thirteen, forced to marry his cousin Borjigit as Empress after eight years on the throne. Before the wedding, the Empress gifted dragon boots containing silver needles that wounded Shunzhi's foot. Eunuchs were imprisoned, palace maids committed suicide, causing unrest. Shunzhi tried to disrupt the marriage by directing blame towards the future empress. Despite resistance, he eventually married her. For Shunzhi, challenging times began as emperor, unable to do what he wanted and forced into unwanted tasks. Setbacks piled up, suffocating him. Even his true love, Wuyunzhu, became his brother's wife, yet their love endured.
