Francesca Gilli, PhD, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, explores the classical complement pathway in the context of multiple sclerosis (MS). The activation of this pathway, which involves the interaction of C1q with immunocomplex antigen and immunoglobulins, is commonly observed in MS lesions. Understanding the role of immunoglobulins in MS is crucial, as their synthesis is a diagnostic tool for the disease. Dr Gilli highlights the potentially damaging function of these immunoglobulins and their activation of the classical complement pathway. By further studying this pathway, researchers aim to uncover valuable insights into the pathogenesis and progression of MS. This interview took place at the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS) Congress 2023 in Milan, Italy.
