In this talk, Les Johnson, Principal Investigator of the two missions Near Earth Asteroid Scout and Solar Cruiser, describes how sunlight can be used to propel spacecraft through space without the use of fuel and why scientists are interested in developing them. Hint: They can allow spacecraft to visit locations in the solar system not otherwise accessible and perhaps someday take us to the stars. This was recorded on July 15, 2021.
We’re launching STEM Engagement to new heights with learning resources that connect teachers, students, parents and caregivers to the inspiring work at NASA. Join us as we apply science, technology, engineering and mathematics to explore space, improve aeronautics, examine Earth and strive to land the first woman and first person of color on the Moon with the Artemis program.
