Protected Areas act as safe havens for threatened species and provide ecological hotspots for biodiversity to thrive. But beyond preserving species, protected spaces act as effective and important Nature Based Climate Solutions to the threat of climate change.
From highly effective carbon storage and sequestration by plants and soil to significant water storage from wetlands, Protected Areas have self-sustaining characteristics which allow them to mitigate climate change acceleration.
Throughout Ontario, there are areas which provide significant cultural, social, and economic value that have yet to be permanently protected. These areas can serve as a significant win for the province against the dual crises of climate change and biodiversity loss if they become permanently protected.
Ontario Nature’s nature-based climate solutions work is financially supported by the Government of Canada through Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Metcalf Foundation, Max Bell Foundation and an anonymous donor.
