Qara Qarayev (1918 ‒ 1982) was one of the most famous and significant Soviet Azerbaijani composers. Enrolling in the state conservatory at age eight, Qarayev eventually moved to the Moscow State Conservatory in 1938, where he met and became good friends with the noted Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich. He wrote around 110 works, such as ballet, opera, orchestral and chamber pieces.
Qarayev's "Path of Thunder" is a ballet based on the eponymous novel by South African novelist Peter Abrahams. Set in the 1940's, the work tells a love story between a black teacher and a white girl in Apartheid South Africa. It is one of Qarayev's most famous and successful pieces. The second orchestral suite from this suite consists mostly of dances, the famous lullaby, as well as the finale of the ballet.
