* On January26, 1950, The first Republic Day was celebrated after 2 years and 11 months for the Indian Constitution to be drafted.

* Dr B.R. Ambedkar took 2 years and 11 months to draft the Indian Constitution.

* It was signed by 308 members on January 24th, 1950 and became effective two days later.

* Two copies of the Indian Constitution were hand-written, one in English and one in Hindi.26th of January was decided to be celebrated every year as the “Swaraj Diwas” in 1950.

* India became a Republic within the British Commonwealth

* The birth of Indian Republic and the installation of its first President were announced by a salute of 31 guns shortly after 10:30 am. 

* During the Republic Day parade, “Abide with me” song is played and it is considered as one of Mahatma Gandhi’s favorites.

* President Sukarno, Indonesia’s first President attended Republic Day celebrations as the first Chief Guest.

* The first Chief Guest to attend the Rajpath Parade in 1955 was none other than the first Governor-General of Pakistan, Malik Ghulam Mohammed.
