Pull Offs - My Secret To Swinging Solos
Duke Ellington said in his famous song 'It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing'
We all know this is true, but how do you make the music swing?
There's one secret weapon I use when I'm playing lead lines which really makes the music swing and it's a technique called 'Pulloffs'.
It's really easy and when you do it correctly it kind of glues your lead lines together and makes them flow and swing.
Here's how to do it:
1. Pick a note
2. Pull off the note using your left hand (don't pick this second note)
3. Then pick the next note of your line.
4. Repeat!
TIP: Try practicing a simple two or three note phrase to begin with
This is not a typical gypsy jazz technique and Django Reinhardt rarely played like this BUT it will give your lead lines a modern and swinging sound, so try it out and let me know how you go. :-)
Have fun!
Robin
