St. George's Castle is one of the most recognizable structures in Lisbon. The oldest fortifications on the hill date from the 2nd century BC and human occupation as far back as 8th century BC. It had been occupied by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Moors before the Siege of Lisbon in the Portuguese conquest of the Second Crusade in 1147. This victory was the only notable success of that failed crusade. An oft-repeated legend depicts the bravery of templar knight Martim Moniz who threw himself in between the gates of the castle to keep it open, costing his own life. His sacrifice allowed his fellow knights to swarm through and take the castle. In the 14th century, the castle was dedicated to Saint George the warrior saint by King John I, who had married the English princess Philippa of Lancaster.
