A liver cyst is not the same thing as a liver tumor. Liver cysts are benign. They are thin-walled, fluid-filled cavities in the liver that do not compromise liver function. Approximately one person in twenty ever develops a liver cyst. Of those, only five percent ever experience symptoms.
In most cases, symptoms only become noticeable when the cyst grows to a certain size. A large lver cyst may trigger the following signs.
* pain where the liver is located, in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen.
* an uncomfortable feeling of fullness in the same area, like you've eaten too much.
* In rare instances, a liver cyst may cause sudden, severe pain in the area of right shoulder.
Sometimes (but not often) a liver cyst indicate the presence of a more serious underlying liver problem, including the following..
* Polycystic liver disease, an inherited disorder.
* An echinococcus parasitic infection.
* Liver cancer.
Usually, only one cyst appears at a time, although some patients may develop several. The only patients who require treatment are those with symptoms. A simple surgical procedure is often the best treatment for removing the cyst.
