President
Our democracy does not exist in a vacuum. The rights we have worked so hard to secure are seen by others as a threat and a constant source of tension and friction.
Tsai thanked the U.S. for its support of Taiwanese democracy. Tsai’s policies have recently been recognized by Forbes Magazine, which ranked her the 37th most powerful woman in the world. This year, the top spot once again went to German Chancellor Angela Merkel. No. 2 was European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde, followed by U.S. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.
Tsai Yi-yu
DPP lawmaker
I think the 37th spot is really not high enough. Taiwan’s accomplishments during the pandemic were made possible by the people’s hard work under President Tsai’s leadership. I think her ranking is lower than it should be.
DPP lawmaker Tsai Yi-yu says Tsai should be higher on the list. Earlier this year, President Tsai’s policies were also noticed by Times Magazine, which named her one of the Top 100 most influential people of the year. She also made it on this year’s Bloomberg 50. In addition, Financial Times readers voted for President Tsai as one of the most influential women of 2020.
