In all the time that Kashmir has been argued and fought over, by its nuclear armed neighbours, India and Pakistan, it has always managed to keep the special status that allows it to make some of its own laws.
Now India says it will end that - in line with a manifesto promise of the nationalist government of the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
