STORYLINE:
Croatians held a candlelit vigil Friday in honour of the victims of a knife attack at elementary school which left one dead and several injured.
Hundreds of locals turned up at the Zagreb school to leave toys, light candles, and join a solemn vigil for the victims of the attack.
On Friday morning, a knife-wielding 19-year-old walked into an elementary school and stabbed a 7-year-old child to death and wounded three more children and their 50-year-old teacher, authorities said.
The attack took place around 9:50 a.m. on the last day of school before the Christmas holidays at the Precko Elementary School in the Zagreb neighborhood of the same name.
It caters for children between the ages of 7 and 15.
According to police reports, the attacker is a former student of the school who lives in the neighborhood with his parents.
After stabbing several children and their teacher, he reportedly ran into a nearby healthcare center where he tried to commit suicide.
He was quickly apprehended by the police, and taken to hospital.
According to media reports, the attacker had previous mental health problems and had been treated at psychiatric institutions.
He had at least one previous suicide attempt.
All the victims, as well as the attacker, are reportedly recovering from their wounds and are not in life-threatening condition.
The attack shocked Croatia, as school attacks are generally rare there.
Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic declared a national day of mourning on Saturday, and education unions announced a peaceful march on Monday to call for improvements to security at schools and better protection of teachers and students.
