The live tiles on Android are actually more robust and configurable. E.g., notifications reliably appear and clear from the live tile when you swipe them away in the Notification Center, and you can make tiles any color you want with any transparency.
Android Widgets can also be incorporated into the live tiles, as I have done for Outlook Calendar, Groove Music and MSN Weather in this video.
