Greetings, I'm Tim of Govberg and welcome to the world of IWC. Today we're discussing the IWC pilots watch double chronograph edition Antoine de Saint-Exupéry reference 3718-08. You can see this one of one thousand limited edition and the entire 2016 IWC pilots watch line on our website, govbergwatches.com.
In the double chronograph split second, IWC continues it's long standing homage to the legacy of pioneering airmail aviator French resistance fighter and noted author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The watch features equal measures of utility and aesthetic flamboyance, featuring the classical big pilots watch case profile with broad brushed satin flanks and subtle polished accents including the narrow bevel atop the lugs and the high glass conical bezel. Outboard of the watch case, IWC pairs this watch with a bespoke Santoni leather strap, expressly created for IWC's pilots watch line by the Italian leather specialists.
You can see these signal orange, that is the signature of the Italian manufacturer on the underside and a vintage inspired dark brown coloration with a vintage simulated patina off-white contrasting stitch. The watch is paired with a robust, high polished, IWC single fold deploy-ant clasp, bearing the IWC marquee internally, and the notation of Shaft house and manufacture.
The dial of the watch is expressive and elaborate, consisting of a sunburst tobacco finish with all applied numerals and indices. The sub-registers for the chronograph at 12 and 6, as well as the small seconds at 9:00 o'clock are counter sunk into the dial for an additional focal plane and feature differentiating concentric circular gioche to add another set of textures upon which light can play when striking the dial.
At 3:00 o'clock, the convenient day date functions are noted and internally the watch features an IWC caliber 79420 with a soft iron cage to protect from magnetism and a screwed in case back with screw down crown to ensure protection up to six ATM of water pressure. The watch also features the unique function that IWC reserves for it's pilots watches, namely the ability to resist the explosive decompression in an aviation cockpit, such that the gaskets, case back and crystal of the watch remain secure in the event of this exigency.
The case back features the image of a Lockheed P38 lightning, the last aircraft that Antoine De Saint-Exupéry flew during his combat career and the aircraft in which vanished in action. As well as only 1,000 watches, the watch is both exclusive and handsome, as well as versatile with the unique split second chronograph complication that IWC has pioneered in the modern era in pilots watch fashion.
It allows one timed two separate runners, aircraft around a course, cars around a racetrack and using the split second functionality find the gap between the two as they cross a reference point. Simply fly back with the split second function and resume timing and the watch reverts to normal chronograph status, so it is both handsome and versatile.
