The Royal's Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is the largest in NSW and cares for more than 1,000 premature and critically ill babies every year.
Last year, Joe Blackwell was one of these premature babies cared for by The Royal. He was born 9 weeks early with a serious heart condition. Sadly, the combination of his prematurity and his heart issue proved too much for him to overcome and after a very brave fight, he passed away aged just 5 weeks and 1 day.
Joe's parents Mike and Jayne, went on to lead the fundraising of over $180,000 for the NICU to help other premature babies and as their way to thank the staff for their incredible care.
Today, we celebrate Joe's legacy and acknowledge the fight that all premature babies endure and the incredible lengths the staff in the NICU go to to care for them.
