This video explores recent developments in the debate about adaptationism. First I outline the distinction between three different forms of adaptationism: empirical adaptationism, explanatory adaptationism, and methodological adaptationism. Next, I consider how viewing evolutionary phenomena with different degrees of "zoom" alters the importance of selection and adaptations in evolutionary explanations. Finally, I briefly examine phylogenetics and evolutionary developmental biology as cases of non-adaptationist research programmes in modern biology.
