Public health officials took steps to shut down the mammoth vaccination site at California State University Northridge on Monday, June 7, as the county morphs its operations to smaller, more-focused sites, in the latest sign that the pandemic is waning in Los Angeles County. Three other sprawling parking-lot clinics will close next week. On Monday, L. A. County reported nine additional deaths, bringing the county’s overall death toll to 24, 354. The county reported 120 new cases, bringing the total number of cases to 1, 244, 254. The number of people hospitalized with the virus dropped from 254 on Sunday to 232 on Monday, according to the state dashboard, with 37 in intensive care. As the vaccinations wound down at CSUN on Monday, Colin Donahue, the school’s vice president for administration and finance, said he was proud the campus played “a vital role in helping Los Angeles recover from the pandemic by partnering with L. County to establish the vaccination center on our campus. ”He added that “the efficient operations and convenience of the vaccination center resulted in nearly 250, 000 COVID-19 vaccines being administered over a relatively short timeframe. ”“We continue to advocate for widespread vaccination with the LA region, ” he added, “and encourage everyone eligible to take advantage of the numerous vaccination locations available throughout LA County. ”Residents who received their first dose at CSUN will get their second dose at Balboa Sports Complex in Encino, public officials said. People who need assistance with transportation or a free ride can reach out to Public Health at 833-540-0473. On June 13, the health department will move three other large-capacity vaccination sites at The Forum in Inglewood, Pomona’s Fairplex, and the L. A County Office of Education office in Downey to smaller sites. Starting next Tuesday, June 15, residents can get their dose of the vaccine at the following sites:The sites are open from 11 a. m. to 6 p. m., Tuesday through Saturday. The move is part of the county’s effort to make it as easy as possible for remaining unvaccinated residents to get their shots. There are 765 sites offering vaccinations, including pharmacies, clinics, community sites and hospitals, said Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer during an online briefing Monday. As vaccine demand has declined, the county aims to beef up the number of sites and organizations served by mobile teams and pop-up clinics aimed at communities of color and other neighborhoods hit hardest by the pandemic.“There is so much more work to be done, especially with respect to vaccine disparities, ” County Supervisor Hilda Solis said during the online briefing. “Young Black and Latinx individuals aged 29 and below are being vaccinated at half the rate of white and Asian residents 29 and below. Overall, 41% of Black residents and 48% of Latinx residents age 16 and above have been vaccinated, compared to 71% of Asian and 63% of white residents.
