MONORAIL AND METRO RAIL

Both of them are railways that can carry large numbers of passengers, but they have some important differences. Let’s find out what they are.
First, let’s talk about the track. Monorail runs on a single rail, which is typically elevated above the ground. Metro rail runs on two parallel rails, which can be either elevated, underground, or at grade. The track of monorail is narrower than the train itself, so the train either straddles the rail or hangs from it. The track of metro rail is wider than the train, so the train runs on top of it.
Second, let’s talk about the capacity. Monorail has a smaller capacity than metro rail. Monorail can carry up to 700 passengers per train, while metro rail can carry thousands of passengers per train. Monorail can handle up to 10,000 passengers per hour, while metro rail can handle up to 40,000 passengers per hour.
Third, let’s talk about the speed. Metro rail is faster than monorail. Metro rail can reach speeds of up to 100 km/h, while monorail can reach speeds of up to 80 km/h. Metro rail is more suitable for long-distance travel, while monorail is more suitable for short-distance travel.
Fourth, let’s talk about the cost. Monorail is cheaper than metro rail to build and operate. Monorail requires less land and infrastructure than metro rail, so it has lower construction and maintenance costs. Monorail also consumes less energy than metro rail, so it has lower operational costs.
Lastly, let’s talk about the advantages and disadvantages. First, we will talk about the Monorail. Monorail has some advantages over metro rail, such as being more environmentally friendly, more attractive and more flexible. Monorail also has some disadvantages over metro rail, such as being less reliable, less safe, and less integrated with other modes of transport. Whereas, The Metro rail also has some advantages such as, it can help you reach your destination faster than other modes of transportation, especially during peak hours when the roads are congested. It also reduces the risk of accidents and also improves the traffic flow on the roads. But their biggest disadvantage is that it only covers certain areas of the city, which may not be convenient for everyone. Some people may still need to use other modes of transportation to reach their final destination.

But, Did you know that, Mumbai is the only city in India that has a monorail system. It was built as a part of a major expansion of public transport in the city. However, the monorail project has faced many challenges and delays. The monorail suffered from low ridership, high operational costs, technical glitches, and safety issues. Other Indian cities have opted for metro rail systems instead of monorail, as they offer higher passenger capacity, more reliable, more comfort to travel. Therefore, Mumbai has a monorail because it was an ambitious and experimental project that aimed to provide an alternative mode of transport for the city’s residents. But it did not succeed in achieving its goals, and other Indian cities have learned from its mistakes, and they have chosen the metro rail over monorail.
