'Beergate v Partygate: What’s Going On?'
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer is being questioned on his indoor beer and curry consumption after a day of campaigning in April 2021. 'Beergate' happened in Durham, while England was under stage two Covid rules. This meant that people couldn’t socialise outside of their household or bubble. But Starmer maintains that this was a work event and that all rules were followed. Durham Police is investigating whether the Labour leader broke Covid regulations.
If this sounds familiar, it's because it is.
Partygate involved 17 parties that took place at Downing Street during lockdown, with Boris Johnson attending a number of them.
But this time, with Sir Keir, people aren't so much worked up about what did or didn’t happen that evening, but more the fact that the leader of the opposition pit Labour as the moral ones throughout the scandal.
Now it’s Conservative ministers who are lining up to accuse the Labour leader of hypocrisy after he called for Boris Johnson to quit when faced with a criminal investigation and now finds himself in a similar situation.
