This video shows a surgery for the treatment of Epithelial Basement Membrane Dystrophy (EMBD) also known as Anterior Basement Membrane Dystrophy. This condition Is associated with very poorly adherent or "loose" epithelium. As you can see in the video, the epithelium can be "wiped away" with a sponge with minimal effort. Clinically, these patients have frequent abrasions or recurrent erosions where the eye dries out and the lid then catches on the dry surface and creates a large abrasion. To treat this condition, we remove all of the loose epithelium and then treat the surface with either a laser or diamond polisher to make the corneal surface more adherent to the epithelium as it regrows.
