Pyrrosia is a genus of mostly evergreen, epiphytic ferns that like to grow over rocks and down slopes, spreading slowly through an above ground rhizome. Due to their shallow root systems, they lend themselves beautifully to basket planting. We are still surprised at how hardy they are in our zone 7b/8a, as container plants loose 1-2 zones of hardiness, but Tongue ferns don't seem to care. These easy to grow evergreen ferns are prized in Japan for their wide variability of foliage, similar to Rohdeas. Pyrrosia cultivars make excellent understory and rock garden plants for the shade.
