In the Perigi OKI area of South Sumatra, the degradation of peatlands is ongoing due to changes in environmental conditions, patterns of human settlement, modes of production, and demands of society. Very recently, with the Republic of Korea’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) funding support, a partnership of the National Institute of Forest Science (NIFoS), Universitas Sriwijaya (UNSRI) and CIFOR-ICRAF is investigating the potential to restore peatlands and introduce sustainable management using agrosilvofishery approaches, which have the potential to restore the ecological functions of the peatlands while providing multiple EGS required to sustain local communities.
