The potential of analyzing social media data for public good is immense. This panel discussed findings from a research effort conducted by The GovLab and Facebook to increase our understanding of Data Collaboratives – a new form of public-private partnership where actors from different sectors exchange data to create new public value.
The panel shared findings from a report examining the current universe of data collaboratives leveraging social media data to help solve public problems – from Facebook’s Disaster Maps initiative to Twitter’s Academic Data Grants ([ Ссылка ]). In particular, the participants focused on the opportunities for benefiting the public good through social media platforms sharing data with public sector institutions, described incentives for private businesses to participate in these data collaboratives, and considered risks related to cross-sector data sharing and strategies for mitigating them.
