By Carla Roberts(KUTV) According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2 million people are treated in the emergency room ever year for fall-related injuries. Many of the patients are 65-years and older. A few weeks ago, 85-year-old Gertrude Waterman was walking out of a grocery store when she fell to the ground. I landed on my left side. So I obviously had not been looking down. Gertrude had some bumps and bruises. She says this is not the first time this has happened. I was in the garage and I didnt want to get the grabbers to pick something up and my hip went out. Doctors say approximately 1 in 3 elderly patients will fall in a given year. Chip Doross, a Physicians Assistant at Intermountain Medical Center, says there are many reasons why older people are more prone to falls. Certainly some deconditioning and being a little bit weaker and not as strong can add to the risk of falling. Also, people are on medications that can make them feel dizzy or lightheaded or fatigued.There are things you can do to reduce the risk of falls:-Exercise regularly-Talk to your doctor about medications-Regular eye exams-Get a home safety check. Doctors say fall injuries can be serious.
