Abstract:
This talk will provide a basic understanding of the health privacy law HIPAA, including discussion of who it applies to, what protections it offers, and some compliance considerations. We will focus in particular on how the law pertains to medical AI/ML developers looking to use health data for model training, and potential partnerships with healthcare providers and payors.

Zach Harned is an attorney at Fenwick & West, where he advises on a broad variety of technology, intellectual property and privacy matters, with a focus on artificial intelligence & machine learning, and digital health. He works with companies of all sizes, from the pre-seed and venture finance stages to large public companies. Prior to his career in the law, Zach worked as a mental health professional serving combat Veterans with PTSD at the US Department of Veterans Affairs. Zach is a graduate of Stanford Law School and is an AIMI Associate Fellow.
