Makeshift is the third annual tertiary exhibition by the Tautai Contemporary Pacific Arts Trust, held at St Paul St Gallery, AUT that showcases the work of ten senior tertiary students of Pacific heritage who push the boundaries of their respective mediums.
The exhibition examined the shifting nature of emergent tertiary art practice and describes the process of research and art making that form the basis of tertiary art.
The exhibition included a wide range of works from photography, installation, sculpture, moving image, performance and adornment. The students were from AUT University, ELAM University of Auckland, Manukau School of Visual Arts, Unitec and Whitecliffe College.
This is an interview with Make|Shift curator Nina Tonga reflecting on the drawings 'See world' and 'From Life' by Chloe Marsters from the Art and Design School at AUT University.
Tonga is currently enrolled in the doctorate programme in the Department of Art History at the University of Auckland. Nina completed her Masters of Arts degree in 2007 which examined generational narratives of migration in the work of New Zealand-born Samoan artist Andy Leleisi'uao. She is also a Professional Teaching Fellow in the Department of Art History and Centre for Pacific Studies at the University of Auckland.
