New ticket machines are due to come into operation at Colchester Park and Ride at the beginning of November.
Five machines are being installed at the Park and Ride site, just off Junction 28 of the A12 and are due to come into operation on Monday 2 November.
The machines give people the option of buying tickets to Park and Ride, Park-only, Ride-only as well as season tickets which offer discounted rates for the 1000-space car park.
Cllr Roger Hirst, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Transport, Planning and Environment, said: “Colchester Park and Ride is ideal for shoppers and commuters. It allows them to bypass congestion in Colchester as the buses use priority bus lanes into the centre of Colchester, with state-of-the-art technology that turns traffic lights to green.
“It offers faster, more reliable journey times of only eight minutes to Colchester Station and just 12 minutes into the heart of the town centre for users, and benefits Colchester residents and businesses by taking traffic off the road.”
People with concessionary bus passes or Blue Badge passes do not need to use the machines. When they use the Park and Ride for the first time they need to take their passes and vehicle registration to the help desk in the Park and Ride building to register, which they only need to do once. The Park and Ride is free for them to use after 9am Monday to Friday and all day on Saturdays.
From Monday 2 November, the introductory fee at Colchester comes to an end and is replaced with the standard Essex fee, as charged at the two Chelmsford Park and Rides.
The fee is £3 per adult, £1 per child and under-fives travel for free. Weekly season tickets cost £12 for adults. Monthly season tickets cost £48 for adults. The new machines take either cash or card payment.
Colchester Park and Ride is open on Monday to Saturday from 7am to 7pm.
The Park and Ride is just off Junction 28 of the A12, opposite Colchester’s Community Stadium, and only a couple of minutes from both the Spring Lane and Crown Interchange junctions. People attending football matches and events at the stadium can opt for a £3 per vehicle park-only ticket at the park and ride car park, which has extended opening times on match days.
