The Charlotte area will need to be Weather Aware due to the threat of severe weather on Sunday.
Two waves of storms will push across the Charlotte area on Sunday, bringing the threat of heavy rain, gusty winds, flooding and isolated tornadoes.
A tornado warning is in effect for western York County until 9:30 a.m. Areas impacted include Saratt, York and Clover. The storm is moving northeast at 50 mph. The National Weather Service reported 60 mph gusts on radar with this storm cell.
A tornado watch is in effect until 1 p.m. for Alexander, Burke, Cabarrus, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Rutherford and Union counties. Chester, Lancaster and York counties in South Carolina are also under a tornado watch until 1 p.m.
Multiple severe thunderstorm warnings are in effect for the Charlotte area, including Cabarrus, Gaston, Mecklenburg, Rowan and Union counties in the Charlotte metro, until 10:15 a.m. Separate severe thunderstorm warnings are in effect for Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Cleveland and Lincoln counties.
