"As a result of World Youth Day, I expect for things to be shaken up. Inside here, things will be shaken up, in Rio things will be shaken up. But I want things to be shaken up in the dioceses, I want us to go outside. I want the church to go to the streets, I want us to guard against everything that is worldly, everything that is the establishment, everything that is clericalism, of being wrapped around each other. The parishes, schools, institutions need to go outside (into the streets), if they don't then they become NGOs (non-governmental organisations). And the Church cannot be an NGO!"

STORYLINE
Pope Francis met thousands of pilgrims from his native Argentina on Thursday who packed into the Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro to listen to a message from the pontiff.
He added the meeting as a last-minute tweak to his busy schedule.
Thousands were left outside as the cathedral filled up.
The 76-year-old stopped to greet and talk with people in the congregation who clamoured for his attention as he made his way toward the altar.
When he approached the lectern to speak, his remarks were drowned out by cheers and applause from his compatriots.
Pope Francis is the first pope from the Latin American region, which has been a point of pride for Argentines and other Latin American Catholics.
Francis, formerly Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, took over as Buenos Aires archbishop in 1998 and became cardinal in 2001.
He was elected pope in March.
The pope urged the faithful to get out into the streets and spread their faith, saying that a church that doesn't go out and preach just becomes another non-governmental organisation.
"I want things to be shaken up in the dioceses, I want us to go outside. I want the church to go to the streets, I want us to guard against everything that is worldly," he told his compatriots to loud applause.
Pope Francis is visiting Brazil to celebrate World Youth Day, a week-long Catholic youth festival.
