Get The King's Microphones: [ Ссылка ]
There are many ways to keep the listener's attention during a song, almost all of them are summed up to a single concept: variety. For example we can use different instruments, harmonies, melodies or arrangements to create contrast between the verses and the choirs, we can also create smooth transitions between them with delay and reverb or make sudden and dry changes, all of these are valid resources for producers and musicians.
In the case of this song we have decided to mix the middle section with a very pronounced lo-fi sound as opposed to the rest of the song, to achieve this we have reduced the frequency range of the bass and added a lot of delay with background reverb. Also, as part of the arrangement we have introduced some guitar chords that complement the keyboard, now we just need to mix it so that it has the same identity as the rest of the instruments in this section.
The easiest way to convert something into lo-fi is to use old equipment, the artifacts created by sound tools built using a technology that was beginning to be explored has become an artistic resource of great acceptance today. So we are going to use Waves The King's Microphones, a plugin that captures in detail the complexities and internal acoustics of some of the best microphones made at a time of pioneering experimentation. But for this we first need to establish a solid strategy that allows us the greatest possible control over the final result.
Our procedure when working in the box is always a reflection of how things would be done with hardware so first we will insert a guitar amplifier without cabinet. This will allow us to control the tone of the guitar and add character or distortion to taste. Then we will completely remove the cabinet, speaker and microphones and replace them with The King's Mics, this is possible with any of the amplifiers of the PRS bunch by Waves, we just have to find a preset that brings us closer to the sound we are looking for, turn off the the IR loaders and insert The King's Mics after the amplifier.
Now comes the interesting part, if we analyze The King's Mics in Q-Clone we will see that its frequency response resembles the curve that would create a normal guitar cabinet IR file, but with a smaller frequency range, that is, more lo-fi. This proves nothing except that being similar devices in their essence, can be exchanged to achieve new colors although this is not described in the manual and is only possible thanks to the digital plugin format, since with the hardware it would be impossible.
Then we just have to choose a microphone model and a position that sounds best with our song, adjust the tone and gain of the PRS guitar preamp if necessary and we already have an electric guitar with the typical sound of an era in which there were no electric guitars.
-----------------------------subs
The B section of this song has been
mixed with a strong lo-fi color.
We want to add a guitar track here with the
same color as the rest of the instruments.
We will use the amp section of PRS Dallas
to control its tone and add character.
First we find a clean neutral preset
and turn off all the cabinet loaders.
Now we only hear the tone and character
of the amp without speakers or mics.
Instead of a speaker simulator we
will use The King's Microphones.
This plugin captures the internal acoustics
and color of three technologically limited
mics, ideal for creating lo-fi sounds.
If we take a look at Q-Clone we will see
frequency curves that look similar to IRs,
only these sound even more lo-fi.
But as we all know, choosing the
right sound is best done in context.
