What's being called the most significant gun control measure in more than two decades was approved in the US House of Representatives.
The bill, called "The Bipartisan Background Check Act of 2019", would expand background checks when buying firearms and close certain loopholes that allow buyers to avoid the checks.
However, it was expected to fail in the Republican-controlled Senate and the president of the NRA said that "the America we now know ... will cease to exist" if the bill were to become law.
Donald Trump, who, at one point, said he was in favour of tougher gun laws, said he will veto anything that makes gun ownership more difficult.
