The central forum piazza, about the size of a football field was a place of meeting and socialization, assembly, voting, riots and entertainment (gladiator fights). This site was inundated with statuary of every type, hemmed in with honorary columns in front of the Basilica Iulia in the late 3- early 4C AD. To the east there was added the Late Antique rostra to mirror the Augustan rostra to the west. Stand out monuments today in the piazza are the base of the equestrian statue of Trajan, Lacus Curtius, and replanted vine, olive tree, and fig tree, mentioned in ancient sources.
