June 1812: Napoleon I crosses the Niemen River and invades Russia without a prior declaration of war. We are at the heart of the first "total war": in terms of territorial scale, the number of troops involved, front-line casualties, civil atrocities, and social and ideological mobilization. What is for the French merely a routine campaign quickly turns into a patriotic war for the Russians.
After a series of crucial victories, the French reach Moscow. Napoleon, who had dreamed of a triumphant entrance, discovers a city abandoned by its inhabitants, left open to the invader. The glorious march of the Grand Army leads them straight into a "labyrinth of fire," a deadly trap that marks a turning point in the Russian campaign.
