The assassination of Paul Castellano on December 16, 1985, was one of the most significant events in the history of organized crime in America. Castellano, the head of the Gambino crime family, was gunned down outside Sparks Steakhouse in Manhattan in a meticulously planned hit orchestrated by John Gotti and his crew, including Salvatore "Sammy the Bull" Gravano. The killing marked a dramatic shift in the balance of power within the Gambino family and the broader underworld.
At the time, Castellano’s leadership was increasingly contested. Known as "Big Paul," he had distanced himself from traditional Mafia activities like drugs, instead focusing on white-collar crimes, which alienated many in his organization. Castellano’s lavish lifestyle and perceived arrogance, coupled with his decision to name Thomas Bilotti as his successor, deepened resentment among the family’s capos, particularly Gotti, who had ambitions of his own.
Sammy Gravano, a key player in Gotti’s inner circle, was instrumental in the planning and execution of the hit. Gravano later described Castellano as out of touch with the realities of the street and incapable of maintaining the family's strength. Gotti, recognizing an opportunity to seize power, leveraged this dissatisfaction to eliminate Castellano and install himself as boss.
The hit was audacious, carried out in broad daylight, and broke a cardinal Mafia rule against killing a sitting boss without approval from the Commission. Yet, Gotti’s gamble paid off in the short term, as he ascended to power and became the "Dapper Don." For Gravano, the event was both a milestone and a foreshadowing of his eventual betrayal of Gotti and the Mafia itself when he turned state’s witness in 1991.
The Castellano hit symbolized the end of an era for the Mafia, ushering in a more violent, media-savvy, and ultimately self-destructive chapter in its history.
