Ira Marcus has been assisting the Elgin History Museum to use photography to tell Elgin’s story and bring its collection to more people.
In this presentation, he will discuss the history of photography and how it has been used to preserve, present, and influence history. He will review how image making technology has evolved and been deployed to capture history over nearly 200 years. He will share what inspired him to create the Museum’s temporary exhibit, “Art in Artifacts – Where History Meets Art”.
Topics in the presentation:
• A Brief History of Photography: From Camera Obscura to Stereoscope and Death Photos to Digital Photography.
• Photo Pioneers such as Matthew Brady, Edward S. Curtis, Dorothea Lange, Margaret Bourke-White and Gordon Parks.
