Update: Power just got restored.
Hey everyone I live in Georgia and we've had about 11 inches of snowfall. Fred's tank was around 50° F so I grabbed him put him in his cup and toted him to the car what all can I do I don't want him to die we haven't had power since yesterday 9:30 AM. I'm taking him to a friend's house right now.
EBay or any similar site. You can buy 10, 25, 50 packs for next to nothing. Easier to get full pieces than trying to bond folder sheets of foam. If you get some inert piping, you could run a couple sponge filters with a single air pump no problem. Much cheaper than using power heads.
So without a doubt, clown loaches are definitely the ONE fish I’d kill to own right now but I only have enough room for a 55 gallon tank in my apartment. Even though I absolutely love them, I’d like to know if this is enough space to house a small group of them long term before I actually bring them home. Does anyone keep these and white size are your aquariums? Pictures would be awesome!
Long term no, but you could grow them out in such a tank and then upgrade or give them away when they get bigger. I have 3 in my 55, I know I’ll need a bigger tank but they grow slow. I’ve had them before and it took 3-5 years to get to around 6-8 inches. In fact he got fatter before he grew in length.
A group of about 6 could do fine to a size of about up to 6 inches max, keeping a close eye on water parameters especially at the larger sizes. Also having good filtration. Then they would do best if transferred to a larger tank. I have a group of 6 in my 65 Gallon but in March I plan to upgrade to 150-250 and then they will have space to grow. With them are 3 balas who are still small and an iridescent shark who is THANKFULLY still small as well.
I have 3 in my 90Gal. With the intention of upgrading very shortly. You also must be careful when using meds, as a lot of them are harmful to scaleless fish. I have 5 in my 96x24x24. One is 13 years old (a rescue, 8 years ago), the others are 8. All are large. Here's one of the 8 year olds with a 10 inch Bala shark.
All clown loaches r wild caught from my country, their natural habitat is a black water environment aka low pH. Feed them color enhancers especially for the Color Red, or food high in beta carotine, that should bring back their colors. Oh yes most loaches don't like nitrates and ammonia so if they r scratching or color fading at such a small size then u should definitely check ur water parameters.
My smallest one seems to have a real problem with water changes. Our water smells like a swimming pool out of the tap. Pisses me off. I use a heavy dose of prime, and the poor loach pales right up and twitches for a good hour. As the others said, not long term. I have 5 in my 180 gallon and they are tiny. They've been in there since August and they grew a little but not much. Very slow growers.
Long term yes! but they wont be healthy, most fishes will grow according to the size of the environment it lives in, smaller vessels tend to stunted their growth, so they may stay small but won't breed, or mate, and are usually short-lived.
they grow very slowly. 55g will be enough for awhile. they can reach several inches in the first few years but after that, it will take them at least 20 years to reach max size. group of 6 babies would be fine in the 55. they can be agressive though even when kept in proper group and given enough territory. i had two approaching 1 foot each and 15 juveniles in a 75 gallon.
