Duke's campus covers roughly 1,300 acres which includes both West and East Campus. At the heart of Duke's West Campus lies Abele Quad, recently renamed to honor prominent African-American architect and West Campus's primary designer Julian Abele. Abele began work on a rendering of the proposed West Campus in 1925, which included Duke Chapel, the first four housing quads (now Craven, Crowell, Few, and Kilgo), the library (now Perkins Library), Student Union (now the Brodhead Center), and departmental buildings. The university's founders decided that a Collegiate Gothic campus within a North Carolina Piedmont forest would be ideal for Duke and many elements of the Collegiate Gothic style can be found on West Campus buildings including finials, gargoyles, parapets, and tracery. One of the most identifiable elements in the architecture of Duke's West Campus is the local stone used for the original Gothic — and many of the newer — campus buildings.
