The Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the Special Protection Group Amendment Bill amid a walkout by the Congress which accused the government of targeting the Gandhi family. This as Amit Shah strongly defended the bill saying the amendments were brought in by the Modi government to restore the original intent of the Act. The Home Minister maintained that the word Special in SPG refers to only the security of the Prime Minister and former Prime Ministers. He listed various amendments brought in by successive governments which diluted the law to include extended family members of ex-Prime Ministers like in the case of the Gandhi family.
