Vaccinations & Multiple Sclerosis: [What you need to know in 2018]
This video discusses vaccinations amongst people with MS. Vaccines are a way of "priming" our immune response in preparation for an anticipated foreign invader (e.g. influenza aka "the flu"). Vaccines save lives and generally it is recommended that PwMS receive flu vaccines for this reason (IMPORTANT: you have to talk to YOUR provider about what's right for you. This video is only intended to help educate and inform.
There are 2 ways to "make" a vaccine. One is when you kill the pathogen (e.g. flu virus) and chop it up, aptly called "dead vaccine." The other way to make a vaccine is not to kill the pathogen, but to make it ineffective, called a "live attenuated vaccine." For people with MS, the general recommendation is "Dead vaccine = good" and "Live vaccine = bad" and Dr. B discusses why in the video.
Lastly (VERY IMPORTANT) there are special considerations for PwMS receiving certain immunosuppressive therapies such as chemotherapy, cytoxan, mitoxatrone, rituxan, ocrevus or alemtuzumab (this is NOT a complete list! Make sure to talk to YOUR provider about your specific situation).
