The Externsteine - a striking rock formation towering around 40 metres high in the Wiembecke valley near Horn-Bad Meinberg in Lippe - are among the most famous natural and cultural monuments in Germany. Around half a million people visit the Externsteine every year. This high number of visitors represents a particular challenge for the nature reserve. Therefore, the Lippe Regional Association as the owner of the monument and the Lippe Biological Station as a partner have made it their task to bring nature conservation and tourism into harmony.
