STORYLINE
An Italian Coast Guard vessel with 27 survivors from what could be the Mediterranean's deadliest migrant tragedy docked in the Sicilian port of Catania on Tuesday.
Members of Italy's Coast Guard were seen helping one survivor off the ship in a wheelchair while another managed to walk.
On Monday, the same ship, Bruno Gregoretti, dropped off the bodies of 24 migrants to the Maltese capital, Valletta, where they will be buried by Maltese authorities.
A 28th survivor who has already been brought to the Sicilian city has told prosecutors that as many as 950 people were on board the ship when it sank.
The 32-year-old Bangladeshi survivor said many of the passengers were below deck and trapped inside when the boat sank.
According to prosecutor Giovanni Salvi, the coast guard estimated more than 700 people were on board, based on its observations at the scene.
