Today’s video focuses on Dar es Salaam, a city found in Tanzania on the Indian Ocean
Coast.
1. Dar es Salaam is the largest city in Tanzania and East Africa, occupying an area
of 1,493km2.
2. Dar es Salaam was built by Sultan Majid Bin Said of Zanzibar, who named it in
Arabic to mean “home of peace”
3. Dar es Salaam has a population of about 5.2M as of the close of 2019.
4. Dar es Salaam has one of the highest rates of urbanization in the world,
prospering in commerce and banking. Over the turn of the century, more
buildings and other infrastructure were erected, changing the face of the city into
that of a modern metropolitan.
5. Dar es Salaam Harbor in the city of Dar es Salaam is the fourth largest port on the
African continent’s Indian Ocean after Durban, Mombasa and Maputo. This port
serves Tanzania and several landlocked countries like Rwanda and Burundi. It is a
natural harbor.
6. Dar es Salaam has been the capital of Tanzania since independence in 1963 up to
1974, when provisions required the capital to be transferred from there to a more
centralized city of Dodoma.
7. Tanzania Port Authority Tower, whose construction ended in 2016 is the tallest
building in Dar es Salaam and Tanzania , the 10th in Africa, standing at a height of
162m. The tallest building in Africa is Tour Mohamed VI in Rabat Morocco,
standing at 250m.
8. Dar es Salaam is the headquarters of Tanzania-Zambia Railway, built in1970.
Tanzania Standard Guage Railway, which is under construction, will have a
terminus at Dar es Salaam.
9. Dar es Salaam houses the second largest stadium in East and Central Africa, the
National Stadium, which can host 60k people.
10. Dar es Salaam’s Mama Africa school founded in 2003 is known to train some the
finest acrobats in Africa.
