PART 1: Operation Pedestal, the Santa Maria convoy to Malta, was the most intense escort operation of World War II. Three fleet aircraft carriers - HMS Indomitable, Victorious and Eagle - pitted their Sea Hurricane, Fulmar and Martlet fighters against more than 300 German and Italian fighters and bombers in an epic struggle to force 14 precious cargo ships - including the tanker Ohio - through to Valetta.
