🏛 Why did we stop using the Roman Numerals?
Math number systems evolved with us. Roman numerals were all cute and nice until people realised that they constantly had to create new symbols for bigger numbers.
To denote 1 million, or 500 thousand in Roman numerals is an absolute nightmare.
The answer to what a better system was - The Indo Arabic Numerals came from the idea of ‘0’. 0 is the answer to the question posed above - which trivial number number can not be represented in Roman form.
Hence the idea of ZERO, allowed us to denote every number there is - a part of a whole, big or small, positive or negative using just 10 symbols.
We often fail to recognise the impact of the introduction of zero as a mathematical quantity. If I were to tell you about the astronomical implications of the introduction of zero - I’d say, it was as big a turning point to humanity as the invention of wheel!
