In this video I debunk the notion that Ferdowsi was single handedly responsible for the preservation of the Persian language and literary tradition in Iran. This false notion has been utilized by Iranian nationalists to romanticize Persian resistance against Arab occupation. This is a major issue as the Arabs were not in control of Iran during Ferdowsi's lifetime. In fact, Iran was ruled by nativist dynasties since 821, meaning that the Arab occupation of Iran only lasted for a mere 170 years from 651 to 821. The survival of the Persian language and literary tradition in Iran can be attributed primarily to the dynasties of the Iranian Intermezzo period, the most notable of which were the Samanids. The Samanids and the Buyids did more for the preservation of the Persian language in Iran than Ferdowsi did, as the latter was a product of the Samanid tradition. In short, there would not have been a Ferdowsi without the Samanids.
