I compare the Neural DSP Archetype Plini vs. Archetype Nolly vs. BluGuitar Amp1 Mercury with BluBox vs. Positive Grid BIAS FX 2 vs. STL Tones Tonality Howard Benson vs. LANEY L5 Studio vs. STL Tones Emissary. These are two of the top recording real guitar tube amps compared to 5 of the the top guitar amp sim plugins.
To be honest I really feel that each of these plugins and and amps has benefits over the others. I wanted to love or hate one over the other, but for instance the Laney L5 Studio (though it works great for recording) is also an amp. It can hold it's own as a studio direct recording piece, but you can also gig with it live, use it as an interface etc. Same for the Amp1. It is full of features that make it unique in ways other than just that you can record directly with it. On the other hand the plugins each definitely have their upsides over the more traditional amps. BIAS FX 2 is much more than an "amp sound". It is my go-to for unique tones such as octavers, wah wahs, vintage delay ..etc. that I didn't showcase in this video. Archetype Plini & Nolly blew me away, and the reverbs and delays contained within them are GORGEOUS as well as their amp sounds. The Fortin for me is mostly a one trick pony ...but that trick is SAVAGE, and none of the other amps used can replicate it. I find myself pulling it up in my sessions quite often because I know that what it does it does extremely well. In this video I only wanted to show the amp sounds without any of the built in effects or processing. My surprising takeaway was that all of these sound pretty great. However, having more than one I think is very important if you want to cover a wide variety of tones and styles. Personally I think having three of them would be enough to cover everything you might want to do. Then you can just mix and match to taste. I will continue using most of these in the future myself. Especially now that I've A/B'd each one and started to hear what I feel each does best.
