Wood ear mushrooms ( a.k.a. Auricularia Auricula ) are one of the easiest mushrooms to identify in South Dakota. Found on broadleaf wood, wood ear mushrooms taste very plain so make they awesome additions to most soups. This mushroom can be found all year long and appears to dry out and freeze during below freezing temps then rehydrating in warmer periods.
