The death of Elliot Birnbaum, musical director of the Modzitzer Chorus, came with abrupt suddenness on 19 Teveth 5718 (10 or 11th Jan, 1958). Only twenty-eight, he was in the midst of many activities. Apart from acting as director, accompanist, and commentator for the Modzitzer chorus, he was an instructor in history at the City College of New York and at Hunter College and was writing his doctoral dissertation at Columbia University. He had begun the recording for the "Three Festivals" when the tragedy of his death occured.
His leadership inspired the Modzitzer chorus to new heights of self-disciplined artistry, unusual among Khassidim. He had caught the Khassidic spirit of spontaneous gladness and warmth, and was instrumental in helping to transmit it to the general public.
He loved the ways of the Jewish people and was beloved by all who knew him. תנצב''ה To his memory this record is dedicated. D.S.
