Checked Out At Six
5 in the morning I was in my bed
I Thought I was dreaming when I heard you say:
"Better answer the phone, dark clouds arisin'"
My ma was sensed: "looks like he gave up fightin'"
We jumped in the car, thought to see you again
Then remember that call I'll never forget:
"Hey mrs nurse, what about my old man?"
She said "I'm sorry to say, but he checked out at 6"
So our music man he ain't playing no more
Accordeon silent, he went out the door
Was it time? Was it not? Who am I to decide?
But I do know the angels they are in for a ride...
Sometimes I think it's all a big lie
Then remember that call I'll never forget:
"Hey mrs nurse, what about my old man?"
She said "I'm sorry to say, but he checked out at 6"
Checked out at 6 (ain't got no fun to tell you)...
So our music man he ain't playin' no more
His piano is silent, he went out the door
Was it time? Was it not? Who am I to decide?
But I do know it hurts that he checked out at 6...
Checked out...
